Contractors State License Center (CSLC), an exam preparation school for California-based contractors, is accepting signups for its classes for contractors license in Los Angeles.
CSLC helps contractors pass the test administered by the Contractors State License Board (CSLB) which is mandatory to get the California Contractors License. The license allows contractors in a range of trades to work on or submit bids to projects where the associated fees are greater than $500. This includes all businesses or individuals who construct or alter any building, highway, road, parking facility, railroad, excavation, or other structure in California. Contractors can be licensed as general engineering contractors, general builders, or in more specialized trades, such as framing, well drilling, landscaping, or masonry. The CSLB has deemed contracting without a license to be a misdemeanor and it regularly enforces its rules through its statewide investigative fraud teams.
The test administered by the CSLB has two parts and is considered to be very challenging by most contractors who attempt it. To qualify for the examination, individuals must have at least 4 years of work experience, either at a company or through self-employment, in their chosen trade within the last 10 years. All qualifying individuals must pass the standard Law and Business examination and a second test that covers the specific trade or certification area for which they are applying, with some exceptions. Both tests consist of multiple-choice questions. There are around 125 questions on the law test and anywhere from 80 to 125 questions on the trade test. The law test requires a score of at least 73% for passing while the exact percentage for passing the trade test varies and is communicated at the test center.
CSLC’s classroom curriculum includes six different courses that cover Law and Trade. The classes are taught by certified instructors/licensed contractors who have plenty of experience working as contractors in the state of California. The class is flexible as contractors are only required to come in once a week in a two-hour block. After completing six weeks of classes, the contractors who have enlisted for the class can take practice exams at home. For students who are dealing with an extremely busy daily schedule or those who prefer to learn at their own pace in the privacy of their home, CSLC also offers a home study program consisting of books, practice exams, and study guides. Following the safety concerns raised due to the COVID-19 pandemic, CSLC also began offering online classes via Zoom and upgraded its classrooms with secure cubicles to make the in-person classes safer.
A spokesperson for CSLC talks about how the school designs its course offerings by saying, “One of the common challenges that unlicensed contractors face is that they need to pass the CSLB’s test while holding down gainful employment to provide for themselves and their families. So, unlike the ample prep time that students get when they are in school or college, preparing for the CSLB’s rigorous test is a true trial of one’s determination, knowledge, and time management skills. Knowing the hardships that our students face, we have designed our course materials and curriculum so that it can be adapted to any individual’s learning style. You can opt for our classroom curriculum or you can opt for our home study program. The choice is yours, though we recommend trying to learn in a classroom setting as research shows that it yields a higher passing rate. Regardless of your choice, we will fully support you throughout your journey to get licensed in California. This dedication to bringing out the best in our students is why we have an enviable track record of successful contractors who are thankful for the time they spent at CSLC. So contact us today, get started with the course that suits you the most, and unleash the potential of your contracting career.”
