New Federal Initiative Allows Thousands of Dallas Students to Cancel Their College Debts

June 28, 2021 at 16:06

The Dallas College’s Fresh Start program has allowed about 14,000 Dallas students to cancel their outstanding debts. These include 11,000 students who attended classes during the spring, summer and fall semesters in 2020, and 3,700 students who attended the spring semester in 2021. The US federal government’s Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund (HEERF) paid over $5.8 million to pay off the students’ outstanding debts. The HEERF has the goal of providing assistance to students who are facing financial difficulties because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Fresh Start was the latest initiative of Dallas College to help students faced with financial problems during the pandemic. The college has also provided laptops and hotspots to those students who needed them, starting last spring and the whole year that followed. Students, who are experiencing financial hardships, from childcare needs to food insecurity or housing, can request for emergency funds to allow them to keep enrolled. Meanwhile, the Eastfield Campus of Dallas College also established a vaccination site when the vaccines became available.

The Dallas College is helping their students that have been financially affected by COVID-19 through the Coronavirus Aid, Relied, and Economic Security (CARES) Act. The CARES Act is a federal law that gives funds to colleges and other higher education institutions to be able offer financial aid grants to eligible students for expenses resulting from the disruption of campus operations as a result of the pandemic.

Meanwhile, a local business active in community blogging, The Barber Law Firm, had reported about the Dallas students getting their outstanding debts cancelled in one of their latest blog posts. The Barber Law Firm, based in Dallas, TX, has over 17 years of experience fighting for their client’s personal injury claims. This firm has focused most of their practice on car accidents, other kinds of negligence claims, and workman’s compensation. Everyday, they go up against the insurance companies and their adjusters, who are the people hired and trained by the insurance firms to minimize claims and thereby reduce costs.

They want to point out that insurance companies usually send out their adjusters as quickly as possible to accident victims after an accident in order to attempt to settle those claims with the least possible cost. However, accident victims need to know that they have the right to seek fair compensation in court as a way to make up for their losses. It’s advisable not to accept an offer from the insurance company without consulting with a lawyer who will strive to look out for his or her client’s interests.

It should be noted that The Barber Law Firm, as evidenced by their new article regarding the Dallas college students, is very much concerned about events concerning the Dallas community. The firm is providing free legal consultations, without an obligation, to people who are victims of an accident. In the event that they decide to choose another firm to handle their case, there will be no charge. And for those who decide to choose The Barber Firm to handle their case, they will work with the client on a contingent-fee basis. This means that they will not charge the client anything until they have successfully helped the client get the appropriate compensation.

The firm has several office locations in Dallas, Fort Worth, Grapevine, Plano, Frisco, and Irving. They have worked on just about every kind of personal injury case commonly seen in Dallas, and in most cases, they had favorable outcomes. Some of the common cases where they provided the services of a personal injury lawyer in Dallas, include: a traffic collision, motorcycle accident, semi-trailer truck, drunk driver accident, pedestrian accident, bicycle accident, wrongful death claim, workers’ compensation, product liability, nursing home abuse, and aviation accident
