New York City bedsore lawyer Samantha Kucher (https://www.rrklawgroup.com/bedsore-lawyer/) releases a new article that talks about elder neglect and bedsores in New York City. Elder neglect can occur in many New York City nursing homes and care facilities.
"Bedsores also called pressure sores or decubitus ulcer is an ulcer that forms on a patient's skin when they are immobile, bedridden, or otherwise unable to move or feel pain. When an immobile person is not positioned correctly, turned, or provided adequate care and attention, bedsores can develop," says the New York City bedsore lawyer.
The lawyer explains that bedsores are a sign of neglect. Bedores affect around 2.5 million people annually. Although they may not seem to be severe, bedsores can be dangerous.
Attorney Samantha Kucher adds that only 5% of nursing home residents claimed they have never witnessed or experienced any neglect at their facility. The Department of Justice reports that in every case of nursing home neglect that is reported, there are 57 instances that are not.
The New York bedsore lawyer mentions that bedsores are "never events." This means that the facility must contact the family member within one hour of the discovery. If the facility fails this step, it could be investigated and they can face sanctions.
Attorney Kucher also states that bedsores are treated in a facility's care and are not usually reimbursed. Because of this, care facilities usually do not report bedsores to the family members.
According to attorney Kucher, “Bedsores can cause patients extensive pain and needless suffering, often going beyond the surface level. Untreated bedsores can become very deep, extending into the muscle tissue and bone, and can result in serious infections such as localized infection, cellulitis, osteomyelitis, and even sepsis."
Lastly, New York bedsore attorney Samantha Kucher urges family members to be observant. Once a family member spots a sign of neglect, they should report it right away in order for their loved one to avoid any form of suffering.
