Toms River, New Jersey -- Today, Christine Matus, New Jersey asset protection attorney and founder of the Matus Law Group, announced a new upcoming online webinar in cooperation with Total Financial Concepts, Inc., financial services professionals based in Tinton Falls, NJ. The webinar is scheduled for June 10, 2021, at 3 PM EST and is entitled “Protect Your Wealth.” The event will be focused on teaching how to protect assets through effective estate planning strategies and the importance of keeping critical estate planning documents updated and flexible.
“With all the uncertainty surrounding COVID-19, many of us are more aware of our mortality and the need for better and more effective asset planning. Especially with the potential of changes to federal taxes in 2021, this may be the perfect time for our clients to understand the implications and techniques they can use to take advantage of the current laws before they change,” said the asset protection attorney. “In this webinar, we will discuss the importance of keeping estate planning documents like wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and health care directives updated, so that you are able to adapt to any changes in future tax laws.”
Currently, the federal transfer tax laws allow each individual to transfer up to $11.7 million to heirs or beneficiaries without paying federal estate or gift taxes. This is set to expire on December 31, 2025, possibly reverting back to $5 million per person, adjusted for inflation. But it is expected that Congress may enact new legislation earlier, perhaps this year or next. The potential is that the federal estate tax exemption could be lowered at that time to $5 million or even $3.5 million. This will affect significantly more people.
Furthermore, although New Jersey currently does not have a state estate tax after repealing it in 2018, there are those who think that a permanent repeal seems unlikely and that it may be reinstated sometime in the future.
“Flexibility through all the tax law changes is critical if we want to protect our assets for our spouse, family members, and the next generation. During this webinar, we want to help others learn about tools they can use to ensure that their estate plan is flexible enough to weather these changes,” continued Ms. Matus. “If 2020 taught us anything, it is to expect the unexpected. For all the uncertainty that the pandemic burdened us with over the past year, it did provide a strong wake-up call for many who have put off creating an estate plan that can protect the assets that they have worked so hard to build.”
The “Protect Your Wealth” webinar will take place June 10, 2021 at 3 PM EST. Those who are interested can register by calling Matus Law Group. A video recording will be sent out for those who were unable to attend the live broadcast. Spaces are limited.
