Pathways Recovery Spotlights the Dangers of Alcohol Poisoning

Roseville, California — Pathways Recovery, an addiction treatment center for men based in Roseville, Calif., near Sacramento, recently published a blog post to spread awareness about the dangers of alcohol poisoning. The facility is reminding Californians just how dangerous too much alcohol can be.

”No amount of drunken fun, or whatever you consume alcohol for, is worth more than your health and well-being,” a Pathways Recovery spokesperson said. “That’s why understanding the dangers of too much alcohol and an alcohol overdose, also known as alcohol poisoning, is crucial.”

According to the post, the National Institutes of Health says alcohol poisoning occurs when there is so much alcohol in the bloodstream that it impacts areas of the brain that control life-sustaining functions such as breathing and heart rate.

Symptoms may include:

- Breathing problems
- Slowed heart rate
- Vomiting
- Seizure
- Low body temperature
- Unconsciousness
- Confusion

In severe cases, alcohol poisoning can lead to permanent brain damage. Drinking and consuming sleeping pills, opioids, and anti-anxiety medications can make alcohol poisoning even more dangerous.

“Anyone can drink alcohol to the point of alcohol poisoning,” the Pathways Recovery spokesperson said. ”Much of it comes down to drinking too much too quickly. This includes binge drinking, which is drinking to the point of a blood-alcohol level of 0.08% or higher. For men, this typically occurs after consuming five drinks in a two-hour span, and for women, it’s four drinks in a two-hour span.”

The post also points out drinking too much can lead to alcohol use disorder, which causes strong cravings to drink, irritability when not drinking, and the inability to quit drinking.

“Battling alcohol use disorder or alcohol misuse can be difficult,” the Pathways Recovery spokesperson said. ”You shouldn’t have to overcome those obstacles alone. In fact, professional treatment can help you remain safe during the detox process and can give you the tools you’ll need to live a life in recovery.“

Right now, around 18 million adults in the United States have alcohol use disorder, according to the U.S. National Library of Medicine.
